It is only fitting to call the current women’s featherweight champion the pioneer of women’s mixed martial arts. With a career spanning over a decade, Cris Cyborg established a reputation as a knockout artist long before the top MMA organizations had even opened their doors to female competitors.
Now at Bellator, Cyborg is continuing her dominant streak, with all three of her wins inside the promotion coming via stoppage.
Her opponent, Sinead Kavanagh, competed in boxing before ultimately making the switch to MMA. She counts SBG teammate Conor McGregor as a source of wisdom and support, personally encouraging her in her bid to become the first female MMA champion from Ireland.
Bellator featherweight Aaron Pico will also compete this Friday. Long considered one of the most exciting fighters in the sport, Pico has never fought to a decision in his 11-fight pro MMA career.
Despite having a grappling background, the LA native has only two wins by submission, facilitated, no doubt, by the world-class training he receives at Jackson Wink. Pico will face undefeated prospect Dustin Gonzales, who made his Bellator debut earlier this year.

The Bellator 271 main event will feature Bellator featherweight champion Cris Cyborg and Sinead Kavanagh. The main card will be televised on Showtime at 10 p.m. ET.
Bellator MMA is in Hollywood, Florida tonight (Nov. 12), and the women’s featherweight title is on the line.
In the main event of Bellator 271, reigning champion Cris Cyborg looks to retain her 145 lbs supremacy against SBG Ireland’s Sinead Kavanagh. Last week we saw SBG’s Peter Queally unable to win the lightweight title against Patricky ‘Pitbull’ Freire, but this week is a gigantic task for Kavanagh to pull off the upset.
The co-main event is a heavyweight bout between Tyrell Fortune and former light heavyweight title challenger Linton Vassell. Super prospect Aaron Pico looks for his fifth straight win when he takes on Justin Gonzales. Opening the main card is former Bellator title challenger Arlene Blencowe against Pam Sorenson.
The card kicks off with a free live stream of the prelims, which can be watched at the top of the page starting at a special early start time of 7 PM ET/4 PM PT. Showtime has the main card at 10 PM ET/7 PM PT. You can watch the main card on Bellator’s YouTube channel if you live in other international jurisdictions. BBC iPlayer has this card for streaming in the United Kingdom.
Sinead Kavanagh aims to make history this weekend by becoming the first ever Irishwoman to win an MMA world title – and only the second ever Irish person to do so after Conor McGregor.
She faces one of the biggest names in combat sports in Cris Cyborg, who has lost just once since 2005, but the Inchicore native is confident of getting the win.
Bellator 271 goes down tonight (Fri., Nov. 12, 2021) inside Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla., airing exclusively on SHOWTIME (watch it here). Headlining the event is a women’s Featherweight title fight between division champion Cris Cyborg taking on Sinead Kavanagh while Tyrell Fortune and Linton Vassell collide in a Heavyweight bout.
Many readers check in before, during and after the fights to share their thoughts on all of the action. Feel free to leave a comment (or 271) about the bouts and chat with all the other Maniacs during the show — it’s always a lot of fun!
Bellator 271: “Cyborg vs. Kavanagh” will take place later tonight (Fri., Nov. 12, 2021) at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida. Headlining the Showtime-televised event will be a women’s Featherweight title fight as Cris Cyborg defends her belt against Sinead Kavanagh.
Amanda Nunes made Cris Cyborg look human at UFC 232 three years ago by handing her just the second loss of her combat career and first in more than 15 years. Since then, however, the hard-hitting Featherweight has reminded everyone that one loss won’t define her and she is still as dangerous than ever. She’s gone 4-0 since the crushing knockout loss, which includes three straight wins under the Bellator banner, capturing the 145-pound title in her promotional debut and then securing two title defenses. Her third attempt will come against Sinead Kavanagh, winner of two in a row. During her stint with Bellator, Kavanagh has had a rather tumultuous run going an even 4-4, which is a rather misleading record because she hasn’t scored consecutive victories with the promotion, which makes one wonder how she is in the position she is in now. Nevertheless, she has the chance to upset the MMA world later tonight, though I just don’t see it happening. Cyborg is still a level above pretty much everyone not named Amanda Nunes, so I don’t see Kavanagh offering much resistance in Cris’s path to securing a third title defense. She does have a puncher’s chance, but outside of that I expect a dominant first round win from the champion.
There are few better problems for a fighter to have than a lack of compelling opponents. That’s the problem facing Bellator women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg as she heads into her Bellator 271 main event against Sinead Kavanagh on Friday night in Hollywood, Florida.
After a successful UFC career that saw her compile a 6-1 record in the Octagon, Cyborg made her Bellator debut in January 2020, scoring a TKO of Julia Budd to win the featherweight title. The win gave Cyborg the unique accomplishment of having held championships in Strikeforce, Invicta, UFC and Bellator.
Cyborg has successfully defended her championship twice, submitting Arlene Blencowe in the second round and battering Leslie Smith for nearly five full rounds before a TKO in the final 10 seconds of the bout.
Now, Cyborg faces Kavanagh, a fighter who enters her championship opportunity riding a two-fight winning streak. Those wins, a TKO of Olga Rubin and a decision over Katharina Lehner, got Kavanagh back on track after a rough 2-4 start to her Bellator career.
