Time: 6:30 p.m. ET
Where: Estadio San Juan del Bicentenario
Brazil is already the first South American team to secure a direct spot in next year’s World Cup. Second-place Argentina is nearly there, too.
Anyone thinking Tuesday’s qualifying match between the teams will not be decisive hasn’t considered how much pride will be at stake in the region’s superclasico.
Copa America champion Argentina is determined to upstage Brazil and show Lionel Messi he has a decent shot next year of winning the only trophy missing in his career. Victory in front of home crowd could also mean, pending other results, securing qualification for Qatar 2022.
Brazil is aiming to complete the best South American qualifying campaign in history, although coach Tite is still expected to continue experimenting with his lineup with an eye on the World Cup.
Only 25,000 fans in San Juan, in Argentina’s northwest, will be at the stadium to watch the teams play a full game for the first time in this edition of World Cup qualifying. The first encounter was stopped after seven minutes of play in September by Brazilian authorities enforcing protocols in place for the COVID-19 pandemic.
Brazil leads qualifiers with 34 points, six ahead of Argentina. Both teams have completed 12 games, one fewer than the other eight teams in qualifying.
Ecuador remains third with 20 points, while Chile, Colombia and Uruguay have 16 points. Peru is back in contention with 14 points, two more than Paraguay and Bolivia and seven more than Venezuela.
The top four teams in South America earn direct entry to the World Cup. The fifth-place team goes into an intercontinental playoff for a spot in Qatar.
Clinching a berth to the World Cup is an achievement in itself for most countries. But if you’re Argentina and you can do it against your archrival Brazil, it makes the occasion extra special.
That’s what the Albiceleste have in front of them when they host an undefeated Brazilian side that has won 11 of 12 matches and tied the other. Brazil leads the South American World Cup qualifying standings (34 points) and has already clinched a spot to the Qatar 2022 World Cup. Undefeated Argentina (8-0-4) can potentially do the same if it can hand Brazil its first loss and other results on Matchday 14 go its way:
Argentina was the last team to beat Brazil at the final of the 2021 Copa America in July, allowing captain and superstar Lionel Messi to win his first trophy with the senior team. The teams then took the field in September for what was supposed to be their first qualifying showdown, but Brazilian health officials and federal police stopped the match after five minutes citing COVID-19 quarantine protocols as the match was suspended in scandal.
Word is expected any day now as to how that match suspension will be resolved. But Argentina knows if it can beat Brazil, it can move to within three points in the standings. And while there’s no prize for finishing first in the qualifying table, it’s about bragging rights and a nice bump in the FIFA world rankings.
It’s confirmed that Messi will be playing in the match, as Argentina seeks to extend its 26-game unbeaten streak across all matches. (The last team to beat the Albiceleste was Brazil in the semifinals of the 2019 Copa America.) Both teams are coming off narrow 1-0 qualifying victories last week, but Brazil will be without superstar Neymar, who picked up a thigh injury which will force him to miss the head-to-head battle with his PSG teammate Messi.

Argentina is in rare form after beating Brazil in each of their past two encounters. Argentina will look to make it three in a row against Brazil for the first time since 1957 when the rivals clash on Tuesday in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying.
The top two teams in CONMEBOL qualifying competition are miles ahead of the competition, but Argentina can close the gap on Brazil to just three points with a home win.
Argentina’s most recent win against Brazil came in the final of this year’s Copa América in July. Angel Di Maria’s deft chip was all that separated the two teams in the 1–0 win.
That win was especially significant as it finally ended Lionel Messi’s wait for a major title with his country outside the Olympics, a considerable weight off his shoulders ahead of next year’s World Cup.
The Paris Saint-Germain forward was limited to a cameo off the bench in Friday’s 1–0 win away to Uruguay, which put Argentina on the verge of securing its place in Qatar.
While Brazil is already guaranteed to finish among CONMEBOL’s top four, another four points would be enough for Argentina to become the second outfit to qualify.
Despite the current six-point gap between the pair, an Argentina win at the Estadio San Juan del Bicentenario would reinforce the notion of a momentum shift among South America’s dominant superpowers.
Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni has won twice and lost twice in four meetings with Brazil as a manager.
Argentina is unbeaten in 20 outings and has all the motivation to extend that run as a World Cup spot beckons, but Brazil will be similarly inspired.
