Team USA in 2018 had four college players on it, including Jordan Greenway, the first Black member of Team USA to represent the country in hockey. Ultimately the Americans finished outside the medal round at the Olympics, but their luck at the World Juniors has been a bit better recently.

They’re the reigning World Junior champions and have medaled in five of the last six tournaments. This year, Team USA’s roster for the World Juniors includes several first round picks over the last two years, including this year’s No. 2 pick by the Kraken in Matty Beniers out of Michigan.

Slovakia, meanwhile, hasn’t medaled since 2015, when they took home the bronze, their only medal since 2000. Headlining team Slovakia is captain Samuel Kňažko, who was a third-round pick by the Blue Jackets in 2020. The defenseman has been on the last three World Junior teams for Slovakia and has two points in 17 games in his WJC career.

It is December, which can mean only one thing: the IIHF World Junior Championship is here.

The world’s best under-20 hockey players will hit the ice in a battle for supremacy and bragging rights. The defending champion United States is aiming for the nation’s first-ever back-to-back titles. But don’t expect this to be a cakewalk for the Americans.,51887129.html

Canada is once again playing on home soil and has the memory of a perfect 2021 tournament squashed by the U.S. in the ultimate game. And, with fans returning to the stands at 50 percent capacity, Hockey Canada will surely be aiming for a golden return for the first time at home since 2015.

As always, the World Juniors are expected to be packed with big goals, big saves and ever bigger wins. With national pride on the line, the battle for gold will be fierce. Here’s all you need to know about the tournament, including the complete schedule of games and how to watch them in the United States and Canada.

For the fifth time in the IIHF World Junior Championship, the United States will have a chance to win back-to-back gold medals; however, it has never been accomplished before.

One difference between this year’s squad and three of the previous opportunities is the bench boss is back. Like Bob Motzko, who steered USA Hockey to gold in 2017 and bronze in 2018, Nate Leaman will return for a second straight year. In 2021, backstopped by the Panthers’ Spencer Knight, the Americans shocked the undefeated Canadians in the final 2-0 to win gold.

No longer considered an afterthought, the U.S. is an established power on the world juniors circuit and is once again expected to be a medal contender. The Americans are owners of 13 medals (five gold, two silver and six bronze) and are aiming for the sixth one in the last seven years.
